2024 Yamaha MT-09 and MT-09 SP | KNOX first look review

One of the very best middleweight naked motorcycles available is back and hitting harder than ever, the Yamaha MT09 and MT09SP.
With a market leading engine platform in the CP3 triple, the MT09 now looks to finish the puzzle with a revised and more aggresive riding position, better dash and in the SP version, some incredibly important updates in the braking system. With the option on the SP model now to remove the rear ABS, it seems that Yamaha may be well on the way to fixing their brake system gremlins which is about the only thing that stops them from taking the middleweight naked crown.

Hope you enjoyed this short video. Be sure to give us a like, comment and subscribe.

Thanks,

KNOX

Bravo for speaking for the ABS feel problem. I found the same in my Tracer 900

Bit of an update as I feel like we didn't quite understand this at the time of shooting, but the SP model now has an extra mode for the ABS, which should diable rear ABS. If this works as it should, this feature should elevate the MT09SP to a whole other level in our opinion. 😆
Hopefully we'll see this start to be applied to other Yamaha models in future such as the MT10, R1 etc. Thanks, Aaron Knox

Most of these updates are what I want in the MT-10. If that next generation is close to this, I'm all in.

I stuck with my gen 1 MT-07 since 2016 which I had custom painted. Now I think it's time to move on to the MT-09 SP as it is equipped with all the latest tech and brembo stylema brakes for the first time.

I like the new look of the next generation MT-09 from the moment Yamaha unveiled it. The front with the new lights looks cool and the overall lines flow well with the rest of the design.

Having sat on it and seeing it in person at Motorcycle Live, it does feel really good.

CP2 engine was great fun and sounds amazing, but it's time for a new beginning.

Love the look, but love how upright the gen 3 mt09 is. Not sure my back could handle the new angle!

I know the S1000R has slightly more HP and torque, but I couldn't justify and extra 10k for that bike over something like the MT09 SP.

if they fixed the abs thing that removes feeling and brake power, I'm buying one again. Let us know when you guys test on out, please!

I’m going stock ‘24 I just can’t justify the SP cost for the riding that I do.

Does the new 2024 mt 09 fit well for a 1.83 cm tall?

Gen 3 SP or Gen 4 base? What do you pick?

I have the current gen SP. The riding position was always a bit odd for me, the bars are to high. The front had grip, but the feeling was vague. Just installed some Gilles risers which bring them 24mm lower and a bit further forward (fully adjustable in all directions). It is a subtle but noteable difference. The new felt better, but the reach felt shorter for me. The bars are angled towards you more. The new dash is really nice, but the novelty would wear off after a while. And of course, those Stylemas. Lovely brakes, but the standard setup can be improved with a set of better pads, although still not amazing.

3rd gen headlight looked animal. Now it just looks like it was made in a cheap garage.

As the discount on the 2023 SP makes it THE direct rival to the new MT09... which is better? the lower more cramped sporty seating with slight tweaks a new dash and headlight... or the old bike with a more comfortable seating position and far superior suspension? definitely the ultimate comparison in March 2024.

Needs a red white paint job, then it would be top of my list

Just SAD that ALL THE UNIQUE SELLING POINTS of the MT-09 got eliminated. In 2023, it was the last upright naked bike that people over 1.85 m (6.1feet) could still right comfortably on, that didn't look like an insect but like a Transformer and that still had a subframe/pillion footrests with luggage attachment points, as well as the option of fitting a windshield.
I like every of the other Transformer light masks in the MT series better than this new one. For the GEN 3 to 2023, Givi and Shad had hard case mounts for larger cases, than on a standard GS in their linup and you could attach a large windscreen to the light mask. The subframe load capacity has been removed from the MT-10 from 2021 to 2022 and now from 2023 to 2024 for the MT-09 as well. It's a pity that none of the reviews mention this.
If the display becomes so large that it protrudes forward over the light mask, you can no longer retrofit a windscreen. Who convinced the manufacturers that naked bikes have to be made for the racetrack? I've been riding an MT-09 for 30, 000 kilometres in 2.5 years and love this engine.
With in the commuteabilty gone, the last real UJM is unfortunately dying in my eyes.

So the Switchgear is off what? At 3:15 you go to say then other guy talks over what you are about to say.

Wasn't sold on the new looks but the SP paint scheme is reeaallly nice in this new styling. Also prefer the "street fighter" riding position vs fully upright for a naked bike. Obviously Yamaha isn't interested in making a 120hp motard anymore. This looks like a sport naked. Also looks like my next weekend bike...

Not sure what the Two 02 sensors are about, compared to the one on the previous bike?
