I just want to say this song saved my life I'm was 13 lived with an abusive mother cried every night I was ready to take it all give up had a noose and everything I listen to this song I went to school the next day made one last attempt to save myself I told my teachers what was wrong I was removed from my mother's home I'm 16 now living with my aunts I have so much trauma but I won't give up so thank you citizen soldier for giving me a reason to stay

As someone who attempted suicide 3 years ago and survived, I personally think this is the best song ever written on suicide prevention, because it does something unique, it's final lyrics can be interpreted in 2 different ways.

Other songs like _"Why?"_ (Rascal Flatts) or _"How to save a life"_ (The Fray) focus mainly on the way your own suicide would make *_others_* feel in hopes that knowing so will stop you from doing it in the future. And that approach is good, and effective, after all, some people are desperate to be reminded how much their loved ones would miss them, like the lyrics in this song express. And in fact I think the lyrics of this song can also be interpreted this way (more on that later).

However, I think the final lyrics can also be interpreted in another way, as in saying: *It shouldn't matter how others would feel! What matters is that you're unique, and that's an undeniable fact, even if no one can see it.*

Notice how the lyrics don't change the question format after the bridge when talking about how others would feel: _"Would anyone care? Would anyone cry?"_

But when talking about the change your death would bring to the world, the lyrics drop the question format, the lyrics are now stating themselves as a fact (because well, from this point on, they indeed ARE a fact): _"The world would be changed! If you left it behind, you can't be replaced no! Tonight is the night you take back your life!"_

Sure, the latter lyrics can also be interpreted as a response to the questions made by the former lyrics as in: *Would anyone care? Of course they would, you are unique.* But that makes it even more brilliant! It reminds the listener that he probably has someone who would indeed miss him, but at the same time it *empowers* him by reminding him that self-worth can come from within and that he does NOT need anyone else to see his worth, because he is a unique individual, and that's an undeniable fact!
