The types of injuries we see are going to vary depending on the extent of the damage to the car when we're dealing with an auto accident. However, it's not always the case. We've had catastrophic injury cases where there's minimal impact to the vehicles. Every case is different.
The most common injury we see is the whiplash style, soft tissue sprains and strains to the neck and back. These injuries usually can heal after some doctor visits, perhaps some physical therapy. If symptoms are not resolved in the four to six week timeframe, we're going to need to get you into an orthopedic doctor to see if there's something more serious going on.
We also sometimes see broken bones in any kind of orthopedic cases. These are usually occurring where there's more severe damage to the vehicle. Maybe even the vehicle was a total loss. Again, orthopedic treatment and possible surgery down the road is usually the course of care with these types of injuries.
Concussions can occur and often do occur in an auto accident. These are very serious injuries that need to be taken care of. Do not try and be tough with your doctor. Do not try to be tough with anyone with any type of head injury. More science, more treatment data are coming out each day for us to better understand these long lasting effects of the concussion protocol, which is essentially, it's a brain injury. The symptoms usually won't even show up for several months after the initial accident. So in my office, what we do, we handle these with extreme care and often will not rush any settlement when I know there's any potential for a brain injury case.
