Hardware news this week talks about one of the first Intel Arc Battlemage appearances in a while -- hopefully pointing toward more to come -- as the new architecture preps for launch. We also cover a solo developer's project to make what will eventually be an open source GPU, Microsoft's renewed interest in handheld gaming, a $1400 monitor, and AMD launching yet more AM4 CPUs. Oh, and Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Hopefully Intel won't abandon their GPU department, we NEED a third manufacturer to compete with prices.

Said it before, but so long as Epyc Milan continues to be produced for server customers, there will likely continue to be AM4 supply due to chiplet binning. Good stuff.

Yay more NEW AM4 CPU’s! (Is this immortality?!)

AM4 beat out socket 775, which is an amazing accomplishment. That was a socket that lived amazingly long for you youngins. Pentium 4 through end of Core 2, an amazing era for tinkerers.

One thing that clearly prevents the FuryGPU to be competitive to modern solutions is the real lack of Xs in its name.

There's gonna be an entry in the AM4 product stack for every discrete dollar value

Ohhh, that Fury GPU is really something. The detailed description of its texture unit is the only publicly available description of this kind of a hardware block, at least that I've ever seen. The overall architecture looks pretty funky, maybe more complex than it needs to... but he's got Quake running on custom hardware, it must somehow map to the typical rendering pipeline. I hope he can put together an openGL driver, though.
Anyway, it's really a great step towards opening up GPU hardware design.

The open-source GPU was by far the most interesting item covered. There have been a number of projects over the years, but they tended to end up getting abandoned and either not using a standard interface, or taking so long that their interface went obsolete (PCI/AGP).

10:25 - Well the original Xbox was basically a box - so if the handheld is no longer a box, then they can just call it the Exbox

I wish more FuryGPUs would come to the market because of this.

It'd pave a day for modern gamers to play unsupported or mistimed games on modern hardware

AM4 is literally AMD's rendition of Billy Mays: "But I'm not done yet!"

Compute Unit isn't "AMD terminology", it's vendor neutral terminology as used in the Khronos group, who specify things like OpenCL, OpenGL and Vulkan. I've already forgotten what Intel marketing language was used for confusion this time.

Thoranos' chick got "sentenced" to 11 years in a summer camp. Seriously, look up that "prison" she got sent to.
