For the record, it being a GIF isn’t evidence it’s fake. It was a common practice to publish live feeds as GIFs with a page refresh every few seconds that would load the latest image. Media players in browsers weren’t common at the time, they were starting to become more common but updating a file on a server was still pretty common, as not everyone had a computer capable of running Flash to play video.

This internet legend was based on the 2001 Dutch TV-movie "NECROCAM". YouTube won't let me post any links here in these comments but for those interested I have uploaded the full movie on my own YouTube channel. Because the movie was made for television in the Netherlands it is spoken in Dutch with no subtitles but maybe the YouTube auto-translate function can help some.

Funnily enough you can literally just see that on other sites. For the sake of forensic science theres plenty of research sites where they place corpses, sometimes of animals, sometimes of people who’ve been donated, and then take daily pictures to document the progress of decomposition. Its something i prefer to avoid

my personal theory is that this is some sort of performance art piece, probably a commentary on the growth of the internet or commercialism etc. at the time period. maybe the corpse is actually the artist, literally being the "me" in "see me rot". it's likely not true but it does sound like a rather realistic narrative lol
