Miyazaki as a secret Idealist- “Personally I am very pessimistic. But when, for instance, one of my staff has a baby you can't help but bless them for a good future. Because I can't tell that child, 'Oh, you shouldn't have come into this life.' And yet I know the world is heading in a bad direction. So with those conflicting thoughts in mind, I think about what kind of films I should be making.”

That was really good. Very surprised on how well written and easily understandable it was.

Howls Moving Castle, Porco, and Spirited Away are my fave Miyazaki's. Then Castle In the Sky, and Kiki. Howl is just so beautiful in so many ways. Kiki is so much a metaphor for personal identity in passions /artistic careers.

What a fantastic video. Rare to see people be this interested and knowledgeable about what they are talking about. 10/10.

Wow! What a BRAND NEW VIDEO
that certainly isn't a reupload of an older video that Studio Ghibli flagged! 😄😃
They'd never do that, no-sir-y-bob! 😍

"He hates authority and power-worshipping, but now he is the authority - Isao Takahata"

I see why Miyazaki don't like so much Takahata, he shows his flaws. xD

Have you ever noticed the weird, ghostly movements in russian animation like Snow Queen? I'm guessing it's because there are too few key frames, leaving the in betweeners morphing between distant frames, hence the ghostly movements. It's creepy.

I don't get why so many people didn't like Howl's Moving Castle. I'm still moved to tears every time by the scene where Sophie says to young Howl 'find me in the future', and it is extremely hard for me to cry watching anything.

Part of me wonders if Mari Okada would ever switch gears to work for Ghibli. After recently breaking into directing after what some have called the most prolific writing career in anime history with 'Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms' (which has got to be one of teh best non-Ghibli anime movies I've ever seen), she shows an insane amount of promise. IMO, Ghibli could continue making movies with an equal quality to their best work so far after Miyazaki’s death if they brought Okada on board. Then again, she might just want to form her own studio. I’m rooting for her.

Ah. You're making me feel bad for liking Spirited Away so much. But Howl's is still my favorite.

I've really loved watching these really thoughtful videos about anime over the past year, so much so that I just subscribed. Thank you so much!!! Loved seeing Shinkai mentioned at 17:01. Could you please do a video about him someday? His films Your Name and Children Who Chase Lost Voices are just masterful. I feel like if he decided to go work at Ghibli, the company could keep on going while producing new content that wasn't just making sequels to one's they've already made.

“Team! Team, team, team, team, team. I even love saying the word ‘team’. You probably think this is a picture of my family? No! It’s a picture of The A-Team. Bodie, Doyle, Tiger, the Jewellery Man... the whole lot o' them!”

Have you considered doing a video exploring the rise and fall of the Disney dubs for Ghibli? They started so strong, but then fall apart by the end, along with the rest of their franchises.

you can even see a shift in the focus of their trailers, where the early discs advertise Ghibli movies alone, were at the end they shift to a majority Disney set of trailers, no longer interested in giving Ghibli the love they deserve over what they could earn. Even changing the message behind some of the movies.
