How To Shutter Drag Images | Photography Tips

Here are two things that you need in order to create shutter drag images. So we have my camera here and the first thing you're gonna need is a wide angle lens. So here I have the G Master 35mm lens. This is my favorite lens to use for shutter drag images. The next thing that you're going to need is a flash. And this is going to go on top of your camera. So here I have the Godox V1 flash. And you want to make sure that you're pointing this directly forward. This flash is going to mount on top of your camera, and it's going to allow you to take shutter drag images.
- In order to take shutter drag images, you have to have a pretty low shutter, around 1/10 and you're gonna point this flash directly forward. Bring your aperture high like maybe F/5.6 and when you take the photo you're gonna drag your camera in a sweeping motion like this (shown in video). Which is going to give you the shutter drag results.
Camera Settings: ISO 100, 1/10/ F/5.6

One last important tip, make sure flash power is at minimum such as 1/128th power or maybe 1/64th power.

Add too much flash power with a slow exposure settings can equal an overexposed image

Second sync and set to a lower power otherwise it’s blow out and look less dramatic. Second sync really make it crazy

This is not dragging the shutter!
Dragging the shutter is a long exposure used to use ambient light. Night shots or interior shots.

Be careful dragging your shutter and don't forget to change your shutter back to the normal shutter speed. I've seen wedding photographers forget things. We are on our feet sometimes for hours and you do get burned out at times.

When you drag your shutter turn on display image after I take it. This way if you forget you will see it when you go back to taking normal photos. And know to change the shutter speed.

Had the Z fc for a while. Really nice camera. Though I am now shooting with a Lumix S5 II and Lumix S9 if I were to go back to Nikon I would probably pick up the Z f.

I did the blurring lights flash by accident with my 2 1/4 film camera BRONICA ETR & 75mm standard lens. I had the shutter speed at 30 instead of 125.

Quick question: Does rear curtain synch accomplish same of similar results?

May I suggest using Wescott? F, J2, that is a crazy Speedway. I believe they have a little more power than the godox has

When did slow speed sync become "shutter drag". I hope it's got its correct pronoun.

This is not 'dragging the shutter'!

This is combination of a slow shutter speed, rear curtain flash and ICM.
Note slower shutter speed vs faster flash and deliberately moving the camera will give light trails or with people in the scene then movement trails with the final position of that person then frozen when the flash goes off.
Never heard of mixing it with ICM but that certainly isn't 'shutter drag' which doesn't refer to moving your camera - that's ICM.
