'Once you put rules to music, your not playing music.'...this great saying from jimmy

This is a great topic. I used to trade solos with a guy, whose playing I admired at the time. When he'd solo, I'd keep the chords really straight, no surprises, so that he'd have a predictable canvas to "paint over" with solos. When it came my turn to solo, this guy would play every freakin' esoteric chord that he could, often changing the major, minor and dominant flavors of the chords, so that I had no canvas, that was predictable. So, he'd throw me curve balls, when it was my turn to solo. Only later, after I'd studied a bit more, did I realize that this guy, was either ignorant about providing a canvas, or just selfish and interested in making it difficult for me to solo. Your video, here, says so much about this subject. If you're comping, support the people who are soloing by making a predictable "canvas" for them to solo over. Thanks for addressing this subject.

Man, I love this dude. I feel like I'm sitting in his living room and he's giving me his vast knowledge on music based on his experiences. What a treat! I'm taking it all in and enjoying it.

Yup, Jimmys a genius. His points are why I don’t like playing with most people. They don’t give you any room and fail to support.

Hey Jimmy - I love that you're posting a little something every day. Nuggets of wisdom and humanity. I don't necessarily tune in every day, but when I do get on, I catch up on what I missed. Better than Netflix! Thanks, Jimmy!

Jimmy Bruno, one of the few who tell you the truth when they teach or explain something... thanks for this, Jimmy ! He's also an excellent guitarist, one of the few that I still value and respect. Congrats, from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
