Love the Musashi audible. The stories came out every week in the Japanese newspapers during world war 2. A good adaption would be epic. I feel like it’s the best Samurai historic literature that’s translated into English.

I’ve never heard of these movies until now. Thanks for these retro reviews! I’m going back to watch older movies/tv shows/cartoons before Entertainment got stupid

Sweet. I remember watching this way back in the day when I worked in a video store. The book is great too for any bookworms out there.

As a martial artist, I have a bias. Also having read the book, I had high expectations to try and temper. But I did find that the movie kept true to the author's themes and character development. Samurai I is the strongest of the trilogy in terms of dialogue and setting the plot. I think a B is a debatable grade but I also don't think it's an A outright.

The samurai movies are an interesting piece of film study, especially for its time after the war. Kurosawa's 7 Samurai has the #1 spot and I don't see that changing but Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy pretty much paved the path for modern anime plot lines and I enjoyed it much more than Rashomon.

I think you had fair evaluative points and critiques that were interesting to listen to but I think your approach was incorrect. I would have either read the book and then evaluated the first movie, or watched the trilogy completely and then reviewed it. However, it is difficult to evaluate a piece of work like this individually as you might miss overarching themes that reconnect towards the end. Case in point; the introduction of Sasaki Kojiro happens in the 2nd film and he holds tension every time he takes the screen up until the final duel, which is a movie in and of itself...

If you read the book, it's a must watch. I was reminded of so many different scenes I forgot and felt as if it colored in the picture for me and was happy to see it unfold, even though I knew many of the plot points.

Considering the time period in which it was made, took place, and the vast cultural differences; I don't think the move is to watch it piecemeal. Watch it collectively. Read the book. More than likely it will resonate with you but if it doesn't that's okay too.
