Lots of castles indeed. Depending on how you define a castle (some of them are very small towers in ruins), the estimates go from 241 up to between 400 - 500 castles throughout the country (which is pretty small in area). you should definitely visit!

As a Portuguese, I would recomend you to visit Guimarães, also called the birthplace of Portugal. That is the very first capital of Portugal. And let's not forget the region of Trás-dos-Montes, where the most breathtaking views of continental Portugal are located.
