Amending The Second Amendment | The Mehdi Hasan Show

The original Constitution didn’t give women the vote, so we amended it. It didn’t give slaves freedom from bondage, so we amended it. So if there’s a part of the document that’s preventing even the most basic gun reforms to keep citizens safe, Mehdi asks, shouldn’t it be time for an update? He discusses with author and The Nation justice correspondent Elie Mystal, who unequivocally believes it’s time for change.

You guys are right about 1 thing. The second amendment isn't going anywhere. I suppose even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

In Canada you have a right to medical insurance, while having a gun is a privilege (same with many other countries), while in America, having a gun is a right while medical insurance is a (crazy expensive) privilege!

The government telling me I don't need an AR-15 is the reason why I need an AR-15.

Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, was proposed by James Madison to allow the creation of civilian forces that can counteract a tyrannical federal government.

2nd Amendment
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed

THE SENATE IS IN GRIDLOCK: the American two-party political system no longer works! In Europe, Canada, Australia, etc., democracies work better with small parties and independent candidates giving voters an alternative to the major parties. The midterms urgently need independent candidates to give voters an alternative choice!

"The obstacles to democracy have little to do with culture or religion, and much more to do with the desire of those in power to maintain their position at any cost."

I love how they get a person with a very strong British accent to explain why our second amendment is a terrible thing

People act like the 2nd Amendment is some sort of sacred text or something. The point of a democracy is to evolve and adapt over time, it is clearly far past time to accept some sort of gun control in this country. I don't really think people's lives will be that adversely affected by some sensible gun ownership laws. As an example of adaptation consider the 18th Amendment outlawing liquor consumption, then the 21st reversing that. Clearly these laws are changeable for a reason.

So simple that even a first grader can understand what shall not be infringed stands for

Owning a slave used to be a right.
Things need to change when you realise a right is actually wrong.

2nd Amendment by design: Provide an armed militia for a new country that didn't yet have a standing army, in case needed.
2nd Amendment in practice: AR15s for angry betas who need a way to feel like "real men" but are too chicken s*** to actually join the army.

This is not 1775 or 1812. We have a well regulated militia in the name of Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. There is no reason why weapons of war should be in the hands of citizens.

we dont need to get rid of the second amendment. just interpret it properly. it says you can join your state national guard. not that every lunatic can have an arsenal

The 2nd amendment is severely outsated. It either needs to be appealed or amended with clearer words on who can own a gun for what purposes with limitations.

Lets not skim over those first four words. A Well Regulated Militia ! Now please find the "Powers of Congress" section of the Constitution. "Congress shall have the power to provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining the militia and for governing such part part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, reserving to the states respectively the appointment of officers, and the authority of training the militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress.
this does NOT sound like "everybody can have all the guns they want". It sounds like a government agency.

“Well regulated” sounds like gun control to me.
