The original Carcassonne is best played as a 2-player game with the following:

- Base Game
- The River
- Inns and Cathedral
- Traders and Builders
- Abbey and Mayor
- As many regular tiles from other sets as you can get your hands on.

If you play it like that, in my opinion, it's a helluva interesting game.
