The reasons for the lack of participation in the workforce is manifold. Many people whose unemployment benefits have expired are filing for disability. Go to the SSI disability fund graph and you can see that they are running out of funds because of the increased claims. The second factor is demographic. The baby boomers of which I am one, have decided to take early retirement. Our mortgages are paid for, our children are grown, and we are not racking up any more debt because our needs are less. We are headed into an inflationary depression and at some point, probably when the Chinese economy hits the skids, there will be a sovereign debt default by the USA. Bottom line is our standard of living is going to stagnate or decrease in the forseeable future.

The increasing failure of the American private sector to provide jobs is clear.
Over the past decades their taxes have declined steeply on the pretext that they will therefore invest and provide jobs. They havent. They have done the opposite. They have exported good American jobs to lower wage economies; and are systematically impoverishing the American population; pulling them down to ever lower wage levels.
This is the social failure of the new neoliberal capitalism. It is not a failure of capitalism in its own terms because the rich who own the capital system are getting richer and more powerful than they have ever been. But capitalism as it is developing is a disaster for the planet and for most human beings.
