In the eighties during winter, if you'd climb up one of the look out posts in West Berlin and you'd look into East Berlin it was like looking from a color TV to a black and white TV, East Berlin was really depressing.
I remember my father parked his Citroën CX in East Berlin, when we came back a crowd gathered gazing at the Citroën. I believe only high ranking party members drove these cars in the DDR.
And driving there in wintertime was horrible and there were VoPo (police) speed checks everywhere.

Here's an interesting story about the berlin wall. A friend of my dads Got drunk one night. Climb on the Berlin wall slip And fell into the nomand area And he was picked up by the soviets in hell 4 days Before being released back into the uk army.

A stark difference between communism and capitalism. 3.5 million people fled the communist regime for capitalism and a democratic government. One side was flourishing and the other suffering.

My dad was there when they were building it. He said it was awful. That people were desperate to get across and were occasionally killed trying. The way he described it made me ask if it gave him nightmares.

In 1985, my friend who was a Polish national jumped over the Berlin Wall and escaped into West Germany. Despite being shot at, he wasn’t harmed and subsequently made it to the USA. After obtaining a college degree, he became a commissioned officer in the US Marine Corps.

Spent my first two years in the US Army in the Berlin Brigade. From 1977 to 1979. At McNair Barracks. This video shows the beginnings and the end of the Berlin Wall. All the US Military facilities are abandoned or torn down since the mid 1990's. No US Army personnel are located in Berlin.

I was at the Brandenburg gate after the fall and eGermany just in the other side was black and white and gray, no color.
If you turned around at the gate W. Berlin looked like normal colorful life then grayness in the East.
It must be different now but it was clear back then.

A few parts of the Berlin Wall are still standing. The Germans used bricks in the pavement and walls of buildings to show where the Berlin Wall used to be.
