The Berlin wall would become a symbol of ideological division and suppression of human rights during the Cold War.

In August 1961, the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic of East Germany began construction of the wall and placement of barbed wire between west Berlin and the East.

When he heard about the fall of the Berlin wall he immediately drove to berlin to visit his friends. He said that it was one of the happiest moments of his life

When the wall first went up, a Russian soldier managed to get through it by ramming an armoured car into it. After he crashed through the wall, West Berliners dragged his unconscious body out of the vehicle, and hid him in a local bar to prevent his capture by East Berlin authorities.

I was born and live in Germany, but my family was always near the Dutch border, so we had no contact to East Germany. But I've heard heartwarming stories of familes who were split by the wall reuniting and crying tears of joy.

My former German teacher was from East Berlin, he was a border guard directly at the Berlin wall during the early 80s when he did his conscription service. He told us in class how he escaped: He jumped down the wall when there was no other serviceman around, ran across the minefields and crossed the spring-guns to reach West Berlin, where they allowed him to leave to West Germany where he became a German teacher in a small Westphalian town until today.

It's almost miraculous that he survived the incredibly dangerous death zone.
