There is a ferry service, but it takes quite a long time. Additionally, there are such small populations on these islands that building a bridge wouldn’t make financial sense. So, Loganair operates a “milk run” service through these islands.

Because the Harbours are on the wrong sides of the islands, so on top of the distance between the islands you also need to add the time to circumnavigate both of them, which makes no sense.

I live on the west coast and have been on that flight visiting family in Orkney and asked them why they need a flight and they said the seas to shallow for a boat to go from island to island

Man I just saw a video of an actual pilot talking about this shortest commercial flight, and then you suddenly make a short about it...Very nice, I wanted to know the experience lmao.

There is a ferry between the islands, though it takes about 20 minutes in very rough waters. However, the flight between Westray and Papa Westray mostly serves as a means to not fly two different planes up from Kirkwall, so it hops between the two islands to drop off and pick up passengers from Kirkwall. Only a few people actually use the service between Westray and Papa Westray.

There is this one peninsula in Bristol bay Alaska where it is like less then a mile from the other town but the peninsula connects like 40 miles away from the town closest to the peninsula. Besides that they take planes from one side to another for kids to go to school. The town is called East Naknek and the other town is called Naknek

I have been on this flight service twice and it is a lot more useful than you would think, first of all this flight exists without a security check and the “terminal building” is a shed and the “check in” is a wheelbarrow that you place your bags in. There are 8 seats on the plane and the flight itself cost 17£ when I took it. It is overall a fun experience and I would recommend it to any eager avgeeks.
