I made of of these. Like your radio, I upgraded it by transferring to stripboard (yours is much neater). Other things you could do which I've done is replace the speaker with a 1.5W speaker and the tuning pot is now a multi turn and the battery goes into a battery compartment accessible from the outside. The IC is in a DIL socket and the blue PCB also goes into a socket. I love soldering as long as it isn't that lead-free rubbish :-)

I bought one for my 13yo son. He put it together on the breadboard in about 45 minutes and it didn't work. He then checked everything and got it working by himself in another 45 minutes. I was quite impressed by the sound, there was minimal crackling sound. I'm not sure I'd pay the £22-odd for it, but picked it up new in a charity shop for £2.50 so was well happy with it at that price.

I built one of these on my channel this year and was thinking of etching a board for it. Mine has push buttons for volume, scanning etc. so looks like a different version. Nice job

That would make a dandy Christmas present! Metal case a big improvement and laughed that packing peanuts could have another use.
Siberian arctic air still here for a few more days. BRR.
Merry Christmas 🎄

Good to see what this kit actually looks like in the flesh. Very disappointing with that fake tuning dial, all in one chip design and pretty basic electronics. I really miss proper analogue tuning instead of 'jump tuning' with modern digital solutions. Appreciate for beginners this is much easier to get going, but it really does not teach you anything about radio electronics. Thinking back to the Ladybird book I had as a kid 'How to build a transistor radio' - that was amazing, coils, variable capacitors, proper tuned circuits and it taught you how a radio worked. Now it's more a case of join the dots! Anyway great video and nice to see you've managed to improve the carboard box kit! Merry Christmas 😊🎄🎁💥
