Looking at Russia from Little Diomede, Alaska Day 2

My grandad lived on little Diomede as an elementary school teacher with my grandmother. He lived there during the cold war era so he had a lot of great stories. He said that he could see soviet spies looking at him if he used binoculars from across the ice, and that the natives sometime traveled across the ice and talked to the Russians, and they would sometime bring messages to each other. There was also once a polar bear that lived underneath the elementary school that needed to be driven out.

This is really cool. I toured North Korea about a decade ago and Diomede has always been next on my list for extreme places. I've been looking into this place for a while and never found something as detailed and genuine as this. Thank you so much! This video will help a ton with my planning

Something I was wondering about: Do the residents of Little Diomede ever visit Big Diomede for any reason? Like to hunt, for instance? I realize the Russians have non-permanent residents stationed somewhere over there for at least part of the year, and that the indigenous inhabitants were forcibly relocated by Russia to the Russian mainland. I also wonder what happened to that community, btw.
