This is one of the questions that we get very often. Let’s actually ask Seki sensei, a Kobudo master, what he thinks.

What’s truly required to take part in our training, is not a Japanese nationality, but passion and respect toward the art. And this is applied not only to foreigners but to Japanese people too. This is why we started online lessons, and we have already welcomed more than 50 students from all over the world. We will continue to provide more places and ways for people worldwide to be able to train in Asayama Ichiden Ryu.

If you’d like to learn more about budo martial arts, katana, and samurai culture from a Kobudo master, please check out our channel and subscribe!

It's such a pleasure to meet a sensei wishing to pass on his knowledge to anyone passionate about it.

I believe him about the foreigners being more passionate; they are literally leaving their old lives behind to pursue this art they want to be there more than anyone

Foreigners have been training rather seriously for decades. He is a great teacher and has some of the best videos out there.

There are a lot of things I like and dislike in how the sharing of martial arts from places like China and Japan has been handled here in America, but I believe it is those who showed passion and respect like Seki Sensei said who have shown the best of what this sharing can be. As someone who studies here in America, I have tried my best to show respect to the traditions that are made available to me, while maintaining my passion for the training I am in. I'm grateful for people like Seki Sensei and Shogo, who can inform and add to my ability to respect and learn, even if I am unable to take part in the actual training times with them due to scheduling conflicts. So thank you most genuinely for sharing this and keeping such an open and generous mind to those of us who wish to learn.

Prior to the late Donn Draeger-sense after WWIIi, the Japanese consensus was that you had to be Japanese. He absolutely shattered that stereotype! In the 1990s, I heard that you had to relocated to Japan to train, otherwise what you were doing was NOT authentic. I along with my various fellow students (now recognized instructors) have also proved that to be so wrong-headed. Furthermore, I know people who have lived and trained in Japan, return to the USA, and do not seem to have gotten it at all (and seem to be too full of themselves). Seki-sensei rightly points out that it is character that makes the Kobudo-ka. Thank you, Sensei!

his willingness to teach the art and pass on his knowledge raises my respect to him to an utmost level. I know that some schools are really hesitating in teaching foreigners, some do but have a limit.

I am so very grateful to be training in Iaido for the last 2 years! It has been an amazing experience on so many levels! Something I hope to practice for the rest of my life. My deepest thanks to those who have passed this beautiful art on to people around the globe.

Thanks for this response, I've seen a pretty heated debate online about Seki Sensei, where they claimed he is a racist and hates westerners. I knew that was bullshit, but it's nice that he gave this response as well, now those idiots can shut up.

P.S., I currently cannot entertain on-line classes given current schedules & responsibilities to my students; if I could reasonably accommodate this training, I absolutely would. I am sad that I cannot participate.

こんにちは、わたしはきよしです。 I’ve been learning Japanese and following your other channel for a bit, but I’m also a black belt, and I practiced with katanas for a while. It’s been a long time since then, and I was taught by a foreigner so Its cool to learn from a Japanese せんせい. You guys are awesome and the work you’re doing is really cool. Keep up the good work!

There are thousands of non-japanese people in Japan who train koryu budo. From Tennen Rishin Ryu and Toda-ha Buko Ryu to Katori Shinto Ryu and Kashima Shin Ryu. Donn Draeger, who would have turned 101 this year, brought many non-japanese to Japan to help spread Kobudo!

I'm glad Seki Sensei is providing this knowledge to us so we can learn. Thank you.

But to add to this question, I would like to know what Seki Sensei's opinion is on learning from him if someone, like myself, is already attending another dojo in person. I have yet to talk to my Sensei to see what he thinks but I'm curious what Seki Sensei thinks too. Would a recommendation letter or anything like that be required?
