I think Phelps being the bad guy was a good twist at the time, because he’s Jim Phelps. The last guy who you thought would be the bad guy. Plus he was confident that he could get away with it since he’s been with the IMF forever. But he didn’t count on Ethan being so good from Jim’s training.

Jim, told Ethan, in so many words: “It’s a shitty job, nobody cares or knows what gets done or what’s going on in the world, it’s ruined my marriage and the pay sucks…I want some compensation for my 20+ years of work and the sacrifices I’ve had to make. (The 10 million)

Phelps making the classic villain mistake of talking when he should be shooting Ethan dead here.

This scene is weird, Jim comes out of the shadows so quickly after Ethan reveals he was masquerading as him that it makes you think they are working together for a brief moment. Obviously they weren't if you keep watching. Still though, was Jim just standing there staring at Ethan wearing a copy of his face? Timing means everything in a movie.

Ethan exposing Jim as the mole was genius. Fans of the show might argue it was a mistake making Phelps the baddie, but for me this was a brilliant plot twist.
