I love the general tone of the first film, it's a lot less glossy and feels like Cruise is playing a different action hero to the type he's typically known for.

Genius. In the 90s Central Intelligence isn't focused on monitoring Bible discussion groups.

Back when the internet was magic and could do anything.

Internet in 1996 is like futuristic for 90% of people around the world . If you ask someone " what is internet" in 1996 they can't answer you.

26 years later internet is like a part of human body

Their idea of the internet seems laughable now that I watch 20 plus years later

Nice move, using the bible reference. Two-pronged - [a] to Max, indicating that the NOC list wasn't, and [b] double-double-cross with Phelps.

Fact: one gunshot is fired in this entire film, and that's when the mega, insane, ridiculous hot Frenchie chick gets popped.

Hunt types 'palaces now lying in ruins', when in fact the passage from the Bible he quotes reads 'places'. Scruffy work from Tom.

In 1996, the Internet was in its infancy and not even that. I was finishing university back then and it had only been introduced in 1995 to our library workstations. Internet sites were absolutely terrible. People have no idea ! Plus, this scene is supposedly based in Prague. Very few residential homes were connected in mainland Europe (let alone in the UK) to the WWW so totally unrealistic, with hindsight. No Internet cafes. Laptops for a minority. The reality for us Generation X. A great movie though when it was released.

Ahhh Usenet, a magical place. Back then, a place for thoughtful discussions and real world issues. Now, a pirates wet dream... God bless binary newsgroups :P

The only good mission impossible, the rest were mildly entertaining bc of all the gadgets they came up with

This was the only Mission Impossible movie I liked, the others were kinda like all the Fast and Furious sequels, if that makes any sense.
