Yeah, I just kinda use the original stat block and then expand on it or subtract from it in refards to what I want my dragon to look like. The magic that suffuses the many worlds of dungeons and dragons is not a flat, exactly the same plastic sheet, it has changes and swirls and nonconformities that dragons detect and adapt to.

ohhh yeah, all my dragons have 2 different breath weapons and I combine them with a different monster to keep them unique.

For example my Blue Dragons are combined with a Behir, so they appear more serpentine and they have a bite/swallow ability as well as a constrict ability.

Additionally all my dragons have lair actions no matter where they are. Like in Dragon Lance Lore, my dragons exude a Magical aura that affects the environment itself. They can create a storm to reduce visibility, they can cause the ground to become saturated and bog like, becoming difficult terrain.

If you're fighting a Dragon, it should feel memorable and epic. It should be a fight for your life that you'll barely survive if you're lucky and play smart.

Do you guys not make spell sheets for dragons? I fully recommend it. I made a red dragon who is an elemental caster with spells mold earth and wall of fire and he's in a territory war with a gold dragon who I use like a paladin with zone of truth and various smites. My players choices will decide the victory but I wanted them to have more to sway their decision than color so both dragons have thought out personalities and both have different skill sets

I made a necromancer dragon once. Give it the ability to reanimate the dead corpses that littered its cave from past invading armies and adventurous.

To be fair, dragons are sentient beings, there's a lot you could do without breaking lore. Maybe they collect magic items, maybe they have been studying on their own to be a wizard or other class. Maybe they've been cursed in some unique way or imbued with a blessing that changes how they fight. Additionally, a lot of dragons fight in different ways. For a little more reference and maybe some inspiration, there's a YouTube channel, Mr Rhexx, who goes really in depth on the canon differences on the usual 5 metallic and chromatic dragons

It is much like this, a white dragon may not care to talk, let them climb throughout their icy cave and act as a stealth ambush, you hear them snore, until they go silent. They are hunting now.

Or you can do a class based on the colors (Blue Dragons have wizard abilities, red having sorcerer ones.)

Imagine a dragon that is a True Polymorphed Wizard. This would fit well with having unique abilities, as well as having cool lore potential

Personally, I kinda just mess with them as much as I like. Most players won't throw a fit about a sky dragon being lore inaccurate.
