Ear training for the classic 1 6 2 5 progression

This is a video for Improvise for Real students who want to understand and internalize the chord progression 1, 6-, 2-, 5D. First, we will talk about the role of each chord in the progression, and then we will practice ear training together with the Melody Paths exercise.

If you want to keep studying the 1 6 2 5 chord progression on your own, I suggest two activities:

1) Practice with IFR Jam Tracks Level 3: Lesson 8

Play and sing Melody Paths over jam tracks in different keys, and improvise freely with the seven notes of the major scale.

2) Practice with the playlist of songs with 1 6 2 5

Listen to the songs on the list and follow the chord changes, trying to feel all the different sensations we talked about in the video. It's important to hear the chord changes in the context of real music and in different styles. You can also sing and play Melody Paths over the songs on the playlist.

Here's the playlist:

Make the Melody Paths exercise part of your daily routine to keep improving your ear!

ABOUT MELODY PATHS:

Melody Paths is an exercise from the Improvise for Real method to help us internalize chord progressions. In the drawing, every column represents a chord in the progression, and the notes in the circles are the chord notes of each chord. In this exercise, I am connecting chord notes to create a melody across the progression. I try to make melodies that are quite linear, without doing big jumps. In the beginning, I start very simply, just choosing one note per chord. Later I spice it up by choosing sometimes two notes per chord. In this video I am only singing, but the ideal is to be singing and playing at the same time.

Hi! I am creating a series of videos about Ear Training and Melody Paths. Next week I am planning on sharing a video about the 6D chord going to the 2-. After that, my idea is to do a 12-bar blues. Is there any progression that you would like me to do? I've started a list of students suggestions... 😉

Hi, what a wonderful way to think about improvising thank you. Perhaps it would be so much easier if you stated the key you are playing in. I play flute and I got hopelessly lost at times.
But thank you again, it's given me a new tool to use.

MODULATION. I always find it hard to grasp. Will your ear-train/harmony coucher address Modulation?

So, you can play any of these notes over the progression, as long as one is making "melodic sense"?

Weird way to think of it but am I right in thinking doe re mi so far lah Tee doe is literally 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.
So if it’s 15 6 8 it’s literally doe, far, lah, Tee, Doe??

Hi, You have a very beautiful way of explaining. Would you please explain the purpose of melody paths. Is it just to understand chord progression?

What is a 5D?!?! I've read your book and done your courses, I really like them. I studied music in college and played jazz with Esperanza Spaulding. I have never heard of naming a V7 chord a 5D and in your book it shows the 1 Chord as a 1Maj7. Why did you label it this way? A 1 chord is not a 1Maj7

What do the numbers above 1 6- 2- 5D represent ? Notes within each of the chords or the Key?

I am playing block chords, sounds boring but ok. But how are you playing those chords? It sounds like your playing chords broken up in some kind of rhythmic way. Any chance anyone at all can explain this??
