One thing that you have to be careful with is the oil level meaning don't overfill the engine with oil, after I took my dads GSV190 powered lawnmower for a mow it started burning oil when I let it sit for a while & it began to blow blue smoke & that's after a rebuild.

I honed the cylinder out & replaced the rings, I filled it up with a bit more than the recommended dry refill which is 550 mLs because it didn't seem to register as full on the dipstick.

I got it to the full level with 600-650 mLs of oil but I couldn't rely on the dipstick, last night I did an oil change which removed the wear deposits from the run in process & I removed 500mLs (about 18 Oz's) of oil.

I refilled it with about 350 mLs (12 Oz) of oil which came almost all of the way up the dipsticks crosshatch region so I added another 50 mLs of oil which brought it up to the 400 mL (13 Oz) mark which is pretty much full.

I started the engine up this morning & there was no smoke but I will let it sit for a while to make sure that the overfilling was the cause of the oil burning issue.

I dug up more detailed service information for that engine & Honda said that the dry refill capacity is 0.5 litres but the service refill capacity is 0.35-0.4 litres !

Interesting one Ken. With no ring tension, probably was over-heated. Rick

Did you do a compression test?
I read somewhere that there's a bypass of some sort on these engines that won't allow the compression to go above 30(?) psi when starting it.

I've got a GCV190 that smokes and runs rough. Trying to figure it out...

Dude: That's a GCV engine on your mower ... not a GXV

Great video Ken! I believe your right. Probably was run low on oil that theory makes perfect sense. Would you happen to know the idle speed spec on this particular engine gcv 160?

I notice with Caber rings, they have more tension.

Ken I got a GXV160 on a HRC216 mower and I hear a pop or misfire it sounds only at full throttle when its warm. Is the exhaust valve not sealing properly?

Trying to get pressure washer to work when engine seemed to bog down, then all of a sudden it started belching out billowing clouds of smoke. What might have happened... rings?
Valve seal?

Was the motor loud at an idle? I have an hrx217, smokes like crazy. Noisy at idle, runs very smooth at high rpm.
