The innate immune system provides a rough recognition and rapid first-line of defense to invading pathogens. Antigen-presenting cells activate the adaptive immune system and establish a link between the innate and adaptive immune systems. Through antibodies and cytotoxic T cells, the adaptive immune system enables a highly efficient, although late response against the invading pathogen.
