Here's a theory. Dobby was Dumbledore's spy in the Malfoy Manor. Dobby warns Dumbledore that Lucius is planning something bad at Hogwarts, though he can't give details as Lucius is still his master. Dumbledore introduces Dobby to Harry Potter's life to teach Harry compassion, humility and empathy towards one of the most mistreated creatures of the magical community. Everything Dobby did in that second year were under instructions from Dumbledore to test how Harry would react to the (seemingly) smallest of creatures. Not only did Harry passed the test (he didn't mistreat Dobby despite all Dobby did), it forged a such a strong friendship between the two. Plus, it explains why Dobby keeps trying to save Harry even after the end of second book when Harry requested him not to - cos Dumbledore told Dobby to. And Dobby did so till the very end, even at the expense of his own life.

In a way, Dumbledore also ensured Harry's loyalty, by placing him with the Dursleys. I've believed for a long time that if Harry had grown up in a more loving, supportive, and (most likely) magical household, he probably would've been a very different person when he eventually arrived at Hogwarts. But after growing up in an abusive home, Harry was given a stark visual comparison between, and representation of, good and evil. That abuse gave him one more reason to rely on and trust Dumbledore, which would've likely been much slower in developing if his home experience had been positive. (8/7/2021)
