Elon Musk BETRAYS His Own Engineers In Fatal Mistake

Elon Musk gets exposed for his intentional disregard for safety protocols in self-driving including specific radar sensors to make Tesla production as cheap as possible, despite his own Tesla engineers' advocation for the sensors over serious dangers. John Iadarola and Yasmin Khan break it down on The Damage Report.

Read more here:

"SAN FRANCISCO — Long before he became “Chief Twit” of Twitter, Elon Musk had a different obsession: making Teslas drive themselves. The technology was expensive and, two years ago when the supply chain was falling apart, Musk became determined to bring down the cost.

He zeroed in on a target: the car radar sensors sensors, which are designed to detect hazards at long ranges and prevent the vehicles from barreling into other cars in traffic. The sleek bodies of the cars already bristled with eight cameras designed to view the road and spot hazards in each direction. That, Musk argued, should be enough.

Some Tesla engineers were aghast, said former employees with knowledge of his reaction, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. They contacted a trusted former executive for advice on how to talk Musk out of it, in previously unreported pushback. Without radar, Teslas would be susceptible to basic perception errors if the cameras were obscured by raindrops or even bright sunlight, problems that could lead to crashes."

"But he decided to go in a different direction. Unfortunately, so do Teslas."

In 2016, Joshua Brown died after his Tesla Model S drove under a left-turning semi-truck. At the time, Tesla was using only cameras as sensors for their self-driving system. The NTSB determined the optical sensors confused the white colored side of the trailer with open sky. Tesla vowed to add LIDAR and RADAR sensors to their cars, so color won't cause confusion. But even after the sensors were added, software was never developed to utilize those new sensors' information. As a result, Jeremy Banner died in a Model 3 accident 2019, under almost identical conditions. Still, years after that, Tesla didn't add software to read the LIDAR and RADAR signals. And as you pointed out, by Dec 2021, those sensors were no longer installed in any Tesla cars. The bottom line is Elon Musk is willing to risk others' lives to save a few bucks. My younger son owns a Tesla Model 3. He had paid for the Full Self Driving package, but doesn't use it because he agrees that reliance on optical sensors results in a dangerous product.

WHAT! I can't believe a Businessman made a decision to save money over safety. No one ever said.

Elon Musk is NOT AN ENGINEER ! He's a "wanna be" smart person . IMHO

Why would this surprise anybody? Look at what he's done to the engineers at twitter. He truely believes they are an uneeded expense and easily replaceable by a.i.

And NASA trusts the lives of its astronauts and of foreign partners to that narcissist...What can possibly go wrong.

There once was a man named Elon,
Whose promises were never quite on.
From tunnels to Mars,
And self driving cars,
His delivery record is gone.

But wait, there's more to this tale,
His Twitter humor is also quite frail, .
From memes to crude poking,
And attempts at juvenile joking,
A true master of the inevitable fail.

I presume that Fortune 500 companies have their share of jerks at the helm of their companies, but at least they have the good sense NOT to put their childish behavior on full display to the public and potential customers.

Nobody listens to experts anymore. Why would Elon be any different

The company needs to be held responsible for any and all crashes while under "Auto pilot" control. The government needs to implement standards similar to aviation for all automation.

I am shocked that he is allowed to put that functionality on our streets. Audi has phenomenal hi tech infinitely variable headlights in Europe. US only allows lo and high beams! So antiquated, yet we let a car do the driving?!

The AI will definitely need radar to play Death Race 2000.

Sounds like an opportunity to sue him.

Comparing Elon Musk to Tony Stark is dumb thought. Tony Stark is/was an actual engineer (in comic books and movies) who went to MIT. He's made a tech suit with a box of scraps in a cave. Elon couldn't make a soap box car. Mostly because he'd have to step down from said soap box.
