Imagine being in a B-17 spinning out of control finding your parachute and jumping out the bomb bay, man these people lived crazier life than the movies

My Uncle was a bombardier. He took his eyes off the scope for just a moment and ground flak blew up the scope. He could have lost his head, but he survived the war and was the kindest man.

Holy shit, that would seriously take some balls ! The amount of pressure on you as that gunner to hit that target before it hits you 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ massive respect to them

My Grandad was a Bombardier on B17 Sherry's Cherries. They were shot down over Merseburg, he managed to escape through the bomb doors and was a POW. 30yrs ago this year you were taken, RIP Grandad.

it’s amazing how calmly and professionally they went about their grisly business when most ordinary people would have been terrified. And they were so young!

My uncle Tony did 25 missions into Europe in a b17. He was 19 years old. He said “he had several close calls, many of his friends didn’t make it home” The Germans shot for the engines.

It’s so weird to see this and it not being a movie. It’s real, the tiny figure in the cockpit of that Messerschmitt is also a man fighting for his life and future.

I love how their communication is no nonsense, devoid of sarcasm, and carries a note of respect and cooperation. I was deployed in 2005 and think we were roughly the same when it got serious.

Luftwaffe ace Johannes Steinhoff later said their hearts were beating and their pulse was incredibly high when they attacked the American bomber swarms. But you start to wonder how the Americans themselves felt, crammed inside the hull of these slow flying coffins.

My father was a US Army Air Corps medic, a surgical technician. When I became an EMT he and I would sit around and swap "war stories". His were about shot up B-17s and B-29s coming back to base, firing flares to indicate wounded aboard and riding the crash truck to go cut them free and get 'em into surgery. Mine were about all the inventive ways New Yorkers had of trying to kill themselves and each other, particularly on the streets and highways. Both of us talked about patching bullet wounds long enough to get the patient to the docs, except the holes in his patients tended to be bigger and nastier.

The attrition rate of Allied bombers in WWII was staggering. This footage is pretty amazing.

Imagine being over Europe in 42, 43, and early 44 knowing that if you got shot down nowhere you could go that was friendly

It's amazing to hear how calm these guys sounded, i am sure they were all scared, but they just did there job to ensure they and their crew mates all got home. Thanks for posting

Also, quite emotional seeing people around you get shot down... people, that likely are your friends or that you played cards with, just some hours ago.

These guys had guts! 28 thousand feet 28 degrees below zero, and no way a b-17 airframe would stop 20mm cannon rounds from 109s or 190s. The amount r crew was in effect completely exposed to gunfire and flak.
I had the chance to talk to a b-17 crew member at an air show many years ago and he said they feared the 105mm flak the most.

People who post on social media and go on protest marches only to call themselves "brave" should watch this.

My uncle was a tail Gunner in the RAF, he got demoted for saying he would not shoot at Italian planes as his dad was Italian... He made it but I can't remember him ever mentioning the war.

There are historical sites that have daily logs of these bomber groups listing casualties, awards, stories, etc. Was really crazy reading the log of my grandfathers plane being shot down and one guys chute not opening. Grandfather lived to 93, but while reading the log, you worry he's going to die. I always wonder how anyone flew in the same bomber all those missions. My grandfather's planes were always getting flak damage, etc so they'd just swap in new planes...some of them weren't even named, just a tail number.

This audio was recorded after but was pretty realistic. The guy recording really did go on mission but couldn't use the real audio because of the swearing in it so he replicated it after but it was pretty much what they were saying.

There is an unedited audio recoding of Lancaster bomber crews talking after the tail gunner shoots down a night fighter. It's worth looking up

Much of that is Memphis Belle footage, with Morgan at the controls (with the helmet). There is also a FW 190 at about the 1:25 mark
