This is a tutorial giving you the very basics of movie/film/video making.

This series focuses on shot sizes, framing and camera movement and introduces you to what effects can be achieved through correct use.

These are the basic guidelines and with many rules they can be broken with effective results but for those starting out I suggest you stick with these and try to work within the rules to start with. Then when you master them you can get more creative.

special thanks to Ross Barrett for being a great camera man.

Took my son to Starwars yesterday. As I was watching the film I just started noticing all the various shots you discuss in all your Movie Basics series. Couldn't help but notice at key moments how they didn't break the 180 degree rule. Noticed how they framed a character up close for impact just before an action scene. Brought a different perspective to the movie. If I hadn't watched your Movie Basic series I would not have known or noticed whey they did it like that. I think it added more to the overall enjoyment of the movie.

Thanks for this video explanation and the film example to summarize your techniques and conclude your basic filmmaking video. I had taken a course in uni which I had to use film and cinematic style to explain historical events. What took a full school year to learn, it took you 2 minutes to explain it clearly to me. I am self learning to produce animation and started making a short animation. Should have seen this video first! Subbed and liked. Keep it up Grant!

You literally break the 180° rule in the first 7 seconds of the video... thanks for the laugh.

You need to slow down a bit. Great information and even enjoyed your enthusiasm, however, I was directed to take notes from you and I found it rather difficult due to the fact that you talked quite quickly. Thanks!
