After almost three years in operation, NASA's ground-breaking Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has ended its mission, after an unexpectedly hard landing damaged one of its propellers. In total, the craft made 72 controlled flights in the Martian atmosphere, covering almost 20 kilometres, and spending more than 2 hours airborne.

Ingenuity did great work and far exceeded its mission goals and expectations, kudos to it and the nasa team for their great efforts! Sadly it only lasted 3 years, now it will be a lonely speck in the Martian sand

It still blows my mind that it survived 3 years.

I swear to god if we ever get boots on mars we *need* to bring our rovers home, Ingenuity, Oppy, Curiosity, *all of them.* Bring them home. They deserve it.

Especially Oppy I literally broke down and cried when I saw they went down. Ill walk halfway around the planet if it means bringing them back.

"An unexpectedly hard landing..." I wonder if Howard and Raj were at the helm on this one...

I really like these short form updates in astronomy and technology Sam

We need a robot mechanic to go and fix all these machines that are collecting on Mars 😁

Howard Wolowitz must have been at the controls.

I can’t get two years out of my drones on earth 😂

Looks like NASA is using DJi as a subcontrator.

Oh, no. I always feel so sad when this happens. R.I.P Ingenuity.

So if someone goes to mars to bring it back. Could they legally take it

It’s sad to see these things go, but they always outperform their expected results and last way longer than anticipated.

We should rejoice in this endeavour of science.

No _fewer_ than 72 controlled flights.

Martians just waiting for the next sand storm to snag that puppy and pull it back underground. If they reverse engineer that thing, Earth could be in trouble soon . . .

There have been millions of drones on THIS planet that haven't lasted as long, or flew as far, as the one NASA built and SENT TO ANOTHER PLANET! Kudos to a great mission!

The real question is who bonked it and are they still employed by NASA? If so I bet they got sent to the “Devon Island (we totally didnt try to pass this off as Mars 15 years ago and were spotted on google Earth) research station”

So nice that we're able to absolutely waste so much money.

Scientism. Nothing that we built can go to Mars
