How to Be a Scientist: Careers in Astronomy

Space exploration produces immense amounts of data: how does that become knowledge that anyone can understand, and why does it matter? Smithsonian expert Kimberly Arcand offers a glimpse into her career in “data visualization” - translating bits and bytes into pictures and stories that bring astrophysical phenomena to life. She and her students also discuss diversity and inclusion in science careers.

Many thanks to:

Francine Jackson, Ladd Observatory
Trae Winter, Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian
Bianca Vasquez, Society of Women in Space Exploration
Tracey Delaney, West Virginia Wesleyan College
Megan Watzke, Chandra X-ray Observatory

This is a *Well-presented* video by Kim Arcand inspiring young girls and women in a STEM or STEAM career! Kim shows that they too are very capable of making significant contributions and amazing discoveries in many scientific disciplines! Arcand is an *Effective* science communicator who masterly
translates scientific jargon and processes from the Chandra X-ray Observatory into concepts to a non-scientist audience. Public understanding is critical to policy and funding decisions in continuing scientific research and development.

Many thanks to the Smithsonian, Kim Arcand and everyone involved in producing this video.

Thank for such a video explaining about this career option. I am currently trying to figure out what can I approach as a career option and listing them and cancelling them out after getting an overlook of the aspects of that career and the fact if I really have interest in it and can do it. So thanks, I really appreciate it.
People like you really inspires us how exciting the universe is and the career fields related to it. With the hard work you do, getting results are amazing and the happiness is immeasurable.

Thanks for uploading. I had the opportunity to see a rocket launch in 2018. Incredible experience. I posted a pretty cool montage of the trip to my channel.

The title was misleading and did nothing to tell me how to be a scientist, besides saying that "mommies can by scientist"....
