How does it work?
It is a procedure in which injury is made to the skin surface with the help of small needles. 
It is a colloquial term used for any instruments where needles are used to puncture skin surface. I prefer dermapen over dermarollers
 
 Which type of scars will respond?
Open pores, superficial scars will respond better. Deep scars or ice pick scars may not show improvement. 
 Fine lines 
Improves skin texture 
Gives a plump feel to skin 
 Glow 

 
Dermapen vs dermarollers
Dermarollers tend to cause microtears on the skin, because of rolling. A dermpen has more of a stamping motion, so the injury caused is more perpendicular which is better for skin healing. Whenever there are ragged edges the healing will not be the same as after a sharp puncture with clean edges. 
 
 How does it help?
Whenever there is injury to the skin, certain cells come in to play to heal it. This helps in building collagen. As you know, scar tissue is also made of collagen. But excess collagen. So we want to stimulate the skin cells to make collagen without causing any visible scars. 
  
In clinic dermapen is more controlled, we take all the aseptic precautiosn a nd perform. If there are any active acne, herpes labialis then you should not do the procedure.
 We first assess the skin, depth of scars then decide the depth of needle to insert. It usually ranges from 0.5 to 2 mm. 
There are different areas on the face where you need to go deeper and areas where you should stay superficial. 
 
How often should it be done?
It can be done once a month. So at the clinic, we assess the types of skin and decide the depth. 
 
 
 
When will you see results?
There will be instant results that is due to swelling, which may last upto 3-4 days. But that’s is not what we are aiming at. We want collagen build up which starts in about 6 weeks. It will be noticeable after 3 -4 treatments ie 3 months. Skin will continue to improve till 12 months. z 
So give it 3 months befofre you see any visble results. 
 
Precautions
Remove make up 
Use spirit or betadine to clean the skin.
 Use a fresh dermapen 
Dispose after use.  
 
Aftercare
 Moisturiser is a must. I prefer to give a moisturiser with dimethicone which will form a barrier on the skin and will help in healing. 
 Moisturiser, mild cleanser or just plain water wash followed by sunscreen the next day is very important/
Strict sun protection.
 I ask patients to avoid any retinoids or vitamin C or skin lightening reams for 2-3 days to reduce the chances of irritation
Be careful about what you apply next 
 If you are doing it at home them remember than many products are meant to sit on the skin and not for inoculating underneath. 
 
Side effects:
 May cause darkening of existing spots
 If not done with proper aseptic measures, can casue infection. 
Do not do it in areas of active acne 
 
Dermaroller at home 
Not advisable. I know this an unpopular opinion and you will find a lot of videos on YouTube showing you benefits and how to do it. But you must understand that whatever I say should be safe. I am a doctor not an influencer, so my words should be backed by science  and I should also not put your health at risk.
If you want to use it at home, then maybe your dermatologist will assess your skin and guide you as to how to go about it to get the maximum benefits without the risks. 
 If you must, buy those skin stamps or dermapen than dermarollers as they are more beneficial and cause a more predictable injury.
Depth : 0.5 mm
Single use 
Don’t attempt to sterilise it. Just use and throw.
Don’t apply any serums after that. Serums will have to be sterile. Formulated ina proper vehicle for penetration. Using any creams that is made to sit on surface of the skin, is not going to help.
