The European Union parliament in Strasbourg has just voted to approve major changes to European copyright law. The initial proposal moved tens of thousands of Europeans to protest against the measures this week. They say they're worried about how new rules will affect free speech on the internet. At the heart of the matter is article 13 of the legislation. Its proponents claim it would help copyright holders protect their intellectual property. But opponents fear it could lead to censorship.

Is the reform a good way to strengthen copyright owners and creators or will it be the downfall of a free and open internet?

This law is bad because it was written under the assumption that technology that does not yet exist would be used. It is as reasonable as demanding all cars to float. So companies will have to use the next best thing, flawed filters, which will harm us all and especially copyright holders.

Younger people grew up with the internet and are better acquainted with how it works, and this is why they understand the flaws with this law.

The UK knew what it was doing when it left the EU union

I am confused. Didn't EU require all its member state to agree instead of a general voting to approve something?

One of the main functions of the system is to preserve itself. That's why they pass old mentality laws that shackle new technologies that could free us.

btw, it's article 17 not 13 now after a rewrite of the law.

Ok but they aren’t copyright striked when they mention the owner who actually made it. Btw, they only passed another meeting. Idk what you all are so worried. Also, it’ll take at least 2 years to become a law.
