Nope. The show runner explained this on the podcast. There was a miscommunication with the animation company in Korea. The writers really wanted the opening to be where the mouth is.

Honestly, I always thought it was for Aangs sake, since the whole "eyes and the window to the soul" think, and the approving stare towards him when he pushes back.

My personal theory is that not having a face would make aang disassociate it as a human target and being typical toph, she both knew this and that showing her eyes would prevent this Plus she is clearly aware of Aangs addiction to avoid and avade tactics which are in essence the antithesis to the nature of earthbending, hence Aang had such difficulty with it
