It's also important to understand in the case of Jackson Pollock that for most people the answer to "I could do that!" isn't just "But you didn't, " but also "No, you couldn't." Just because it's abstract and doesn't depict an interpretation of real life doesn't mean that it's easy and anyone could do it. A lot of effort and craft went into making his most famous paintings. He used unconventional materials to create unique textures in his work, such as mixing broken glass into house paint. It should also be remembered that the drip paintings were only one phase of his career. Pollock was a very skilled artist, more than capable of creating art other than his famous splatter paintings. While the drip paintings remain his most famous work, he did work in other styles throughout his career, work that, although usually at least partially abstract, demonstrated clear talent that went beyond the random dribbling his paintings are derided as. Obviously technical skill isn't the end all be all of art, but ignorant people shouldn't deride a talented man as a hack just for making art that requires skills less obvious than those used to create less abstract art. So no, you and your four year old aren't just as talented as Jackson Pollock.

I would like to make a comment on the Jackson Pollock tweet. If you are an art student or taken an art class you (you might be one of them) have heard the whole “this isn’t even art. Anyone can do that” etc. So my professor actually had the class do a Pollock painting and when I tell you EVERYONE struggled. It looks simple and “dumb” but when you actually do it it’s pretty difficult.
