I think it's also important to say that the USA trained special military police to deal with the Zapatistas. Those trained eventually became the 'Zetas, ' one of the most dangerous cartels in Mexico until recently

This is a really difficult topic, since much of what has happened with the Zapatistas has left scarce sources, and most of them are in Spanish. If you ever plan on doing another video on them I suggest you talk about their art. Also women have incorporated in the Zapatista movement strongly, and this movement advocates for the rights of nature too. I didn't get to visit the Zapatista controlled areas when I went to Chiapas, but the influence of the indigenous comunes can also be seen in the Mexican controlled cities.
A doctor that worked both in the city and in the nearby Zapatista comune saved me with free medical treatment at the local pharmacy, when I had an infected spider bite and was too broke to afford to go to the Mexican hospital as a foreigner with no insurance.

Like labeling the Zapatistas as "anarchist, " it's a bad idea to apply anarchist labels to their structures as well. The armed wing of the EZLN is hierarchical, and the major political action of the senior members has historically been to negotiate with the Mexican military. This means that there *is* an aspect of centralization to the EZLN, as they must be completely unified behind their positions in negotiations.

In a sense, it's almost like a representative democracy, as the decisions made in democratic meetings are carried forward by these military leaders.

This is especially important in the case of a resurgence in Mexican antagonism to the EZLN. In such a case, the Zapatistas will undoubtedly take on the characteristics of siege socialism that are necessary for survival. The Zapatistas are in the business of achieving results, not maintaining ideological purity, which is why they do not like anarchist labels.

Fun fact I learned about the Zapatistas from the channel, Anark. Unlike the ML states who thought that the best way to protect from infiltration from outside forces trying to undermine their socialist project would be to centralize power, the Zapatistas chose to DECENTRALIZE when they suspected infiltration. They did the diametric opposite of what the USSR and similar states did, and guess what? It worked.
