In a nutshell: Shoshana Zuboff: Shoshana Zuboff: Surveillance Capitalism and Democracy

The collection and analysis of data is changing the way economies operate. Are these changes so fundamental that they can be said to have led to the emergence of a new form of capitalism – surveillance capitalism? If people’s behaviour is made increasingly transparent, do we become a society in which trust is no longer necessary? Are individuals a mere appendage to the digital machine, objects of new mechanisms which reward and punish according to the determinations of private capital? How is social cohesion affected when people become dispensable as a labour force, while their data continues to provide function as a source of value in lucrative new markets that trade in predictions of human behaviour? How should we understand the new quality of power that arises from these unprecedented conditions? What kind of society does it aim to create? And what ramifications will these developments have for the principles of liberal democracy? Will privacy law and anti-trust law be enough? How can we tame what we do not yet understand?

At no other time in history, have the wealthiest private corporations, had at their disposal, a pervasive global architecture of ubiquitous computation. Able to amass unparalleled concentrations of information about individuals, groups & populations. Sufficient to mobilise the pivot from the monitoring to the actuation of behaviour, remotely & at scale. This my friends is unprecedented.

This is a most important subject. I've listened to many voices on this, in my view Shoshana is the best at outlling the meta story. The idea that she puts forward that the elities throughout history have always had to get the workers/surfs etc have always had to buy into what the elities wanted, there was always a strong social contract, hard won, much needed.
Now they dont need any permission at all, they can just take it and they do.... if there Is anything thats more worrying than that I'd like to know it, Oh and by the way States. `Corporations, factions, have all been using and honing this technology for approaching a decade.
Well done for putting all this together

I cannot believe that I was the 713 viewer of this enlightening speaker giving insight to this topic,
What a privilege to listen to and should be addressed to all concerned,
It’s been well over a month since released on YouTube
If this doesn’t hit 100M views by the end of this year we all must have our eyes closed,
Such intelligence like this doesn’t come very often, especially during this pandemic we all are experiencing,
You rock 👍

The Democratic Capitalism we had before Neoliberalism arrived in the 1980s & started the swing to increasing Corporate Control,
would be a step in the right direction ! ! : )

There is an existing legal precedent for controlling access to available medical data for medical research purposes in healthcare called “informed consent.” Perhaps that construct may help explicate the need for similar legal constraints on what is done with available data in the economic sphere. Behavioral manipulation of people for profit, in whatever manner this is done, is an ugly prospect. Our laws derive from our ethics, our laws are not the basis for our ethics, e.g., lawful isn’t always ethical. [Lawful is a necessary but insufficient condition.] Actions predicated on assertions like, “Greed is good, ” for instance, may be lawful, but, as ethics extends beyond mere self-interest, they are insufficient to guarantee that such actions will be ethical. Society needs ethics more than laws.

It will be such a great thing if we can invite Mrs.Zuboff to Romania.

She gave me a shivering realization that we are not wearing any clothes. I guess this intense feeling may have some parallel to the feelings of Adam when he tasted the fruit of knowledge for the first time.

Zuboff is just an unparallel orator of substance.

It's a paradox we have to come here to the core of surveillance democracy to see this video.

"The government" = "The corporations". I don't see democracy having a role in this.

Interesting. But a flawed solution. So called democracy is what has got us into this situation. Our only hope is direct politics. Governments using multi referendum, legally binding, to steer policy and laws.,

What better way to test their facial recognition sftwr than to force the majority of the population to wear masks. Then when the masks come off, they see how many matches they actually get.

totalitarian surveillance sucks but so does socialist democracy. America is a constitutional republic.
