The purpose of an OS is to encapsulate the behavior of a computer system into abstract and intuitive manner that is convenient for understanding and management. In other words, shield the details from the user, so software don't have to deal with registers and clocking. It is with OS that we can utilize complex and powerful computer system, directly dealing with hardware, we can only manage handheld calculator.
