Deck Repair and Restoration | How to Refinish Decking

This 30+ year old deck was in need of a lot of repairs from rot, water damage, and a peeling paint finish. I'll show you how I revamped the entire design, built a new deck step, and refinished the deck with a solid stain applied using a Wagner airless sprayer.

The timing of this is stellar. I’m planning my own step for my deck. The ground has sunk over the years and my knees can’t take the huge drop anymore.

Great job on your projects overall. A few friendly tips on the deck staining (meant in the spirit of being helpful): move everything off the deck (including spray rig); add a screw on 3' extension to the gun (save your back) ; Lower your pressure; either mask the siding (12"-18" paper and masking gun), or use a shield when close to siding; use an extension pole and med.nap roller to back roll stain into decking (again, save your back and way quicker); spray out a large area (5'x5' or more), then back roll (just rest roller with ext.pole in an empty 5 gal. bucket while spraying); save your knees and get a good pair of knee pads when you have to crawl around. / Keep up the good work!

The deck looks brand new. It looks so much better with the step, it looks bigger also. That's such a beautiful view, I would be out there as much as possible.

Latest news I heard is it does not matter if the grain is inverted. Best advice I have heard is use good fasteners and it should be good. The theory is still controversial, bu my deck is about 30 years old, and the boards still work. My thought is just tightening them good and make sure the water drains off. Good Work and good luck.

First off, great job. The repairs came out nice and the finish looks great. That Wagner sprayer seems to be the right choice for a project like that. It is concerning though that the deck was in such rough shape. I know those are close to the ground, but proper french draining underneath and adding some lattice or fenched vent holes in the correct spots in the deck skirt should also the deck board slats to do what they do best, allow the underside of the deck to stay dry.
Anyway, again, great fixes! Thanks for sharing.

Great job, your growing skills and hard work are paying dividends . The orientation of the boards is not a problem as long as they are dry when installed and properly fastened. Deck rot is largely due to prolonged contact with wet soil, gravel, drainage, ventilation and a good UV resistant deck coating will prolong the integrity of the timber.

I replaced some stairs to a front porch with pressure treated lumber and, like you, I put the best looking face up. Many years later the boards with the 'cupping' up have started to pool water in them and the stain we put on them is either flaking off or the boards are growing algae. So, you'll have to see if this causes maintenance issues for you down the road. It certainly has for me.

Always a good saturday when there's a welcome to the woods vid to watch! Have to admit watching that lag bolt going in without a washer was quite traumatic. 🤪 Love your videos and I recommend them to other tubers starting their diy channels. Its been a real Pleasure watching you get better and better at ever more difficult projects over the years. Keep them coming!
