This might have been covert in the days of the Dakotas, but today's technology sees heat, not just flame. True covert meals are not cooked . If you are evading someone in the wild, huddle up under a heat reflective blanket in a ditch and eat beef jerky and trail mix until the danger passes and it's safe to move about in the open once more

I use this all the time however one time I was out camping, a ranger came out and told me not to because the coals/embers from them could start a Forrest fire underground, charring roots and destroying trees. I guess it happened some years back in my state, but you need to choose the right spot in order for this not to happen.

Great advice! You can remove all the bark from your wood. Smoke comes from the bark... very little from the wood itself

This is something I learned 40 or more years ago in Boy Scouts. You have to make sure the coals are completely extinguished before filling the hole back in.

I taught my kids how to do this and cook on it and they had a great time. They made their own dinner and were completely into the moment of learning something real. And it’s something people could teach in their own backyard if they can’t make it out to the woods

Coming from the city I used to do a lot of covert camping in forest preserves in the city and I actually use this to avoid detection. It also helps protect the fire from strong winds.
