I would like a tutorial on identifying chert and flint, what types of landscapes/environments are they generally found, impurities to look for, etc.

Glad to hear you heated those over heat. Nothing's bad as heating them over cold. Takes forever.😂

I'll admit, I get a tad heated when I hear about how some folks preferred method of heating things over heat is to heat them over heat.

Would have loved to watch you straightening them. Cool that you practice with modern steel points, then go for authentic points when it counts.

Ryan, have you ever thought about offering some cane starts for sale? The switch cane around me has such gnarly nodules that they're really hard to get consistent. Be nice to have my own patch of good quality.

That’s some good info brother, thank you, had no idea about the oscillation. I just pulled over on the side of the rode today in my town because I found a thick patch of some sort of cane. I thought it was river cane just based off of a quick google image search, looked the same, grabbed some green pieces that looked about the right thickness. Now just about to figure out how to dry them and make arrows

Very nice, , I’m a arrow maker, I tip my arrows with steel points or obsidian arrowheads… the wood for my shafts are “”Apache Plume, salt cedar, etc, ,

Trees of the cotinus family will also provide some really straight branches in the right range of thickness, if anyone cares to know. (Usually used as ornamental plantings, but there must be some growing wild somewhere.) If you ever do some yard care or arborist work with pole lopers, it'd be pretty quick to stock up enough material to source a few quiver's worth of arrows.

As always inspiring and educational!!
Thanks Ryan.

Often times some of the natural bends come back into my cane after shooting them. I think the shafts with only two nodes in them are easier to keep straight.

You do nice work. This is beautiful and practical.

Where do you source the cane from? We have a few forests of bamboo, will that work as well as the cane?

You ever practice with the broadheads to make sure they’re flying good? Or does it not matter

Are you harvesting these when they are green or dried out

I saw arrows like that with stone head and half wood in front and cane in the back in a museum in Santa Barbara
