The 13.5" Surface Laptop 3 features an all-metal design, just like the MacBook Pro, so it feels very premium.

The displays are pretty similar, and the keyboard feels a bit more traditional and easier to type on with the Surface Laptop 3.

In terms of performance, we were actually surprised by the results! Check out this full comparison to find out!

Totally overlooked the touch screen on the Surface.

Come on now, you should know better Max:
The USBC port on the surface does indeed support monitors and docks, and ssd's, just not faster gpu's and tb3 products.
The surface dock charges faster than usbc, and has an extra usba charger port on it, it also has a ton of docks and adapters available, including ironically a Microsoft usbc adapter that supports charging, most do not know this.

Again the usbc port on the surface along with adapters for the surfaceconnect fully support 4k Color accurate monitors.

And the Surface fully supports artists with their stylus support for drawing/image editing/video editing/music editing programs, and their full touch screen supports video and audio editing and web surface using your fingers/pen on the screen for better and faster control in many situations than a trackpad or mouse.

I am suprised you did not mention the touchscreen.
Or that Microsoft sells docks and a usbc adapter for the surface connect. (that supports docks, monitors, and usbc charging).
That the surface connect is magnetic like Magsafe, and can save your laptop from a fall if you trip over the cord, while charging.
That the surface connect allows for fast charging, faster than usbc or thunderbolt-80% in 1 hour.
The ssd and wifi card can be upgraded in the surface 3 laptop.
The fabric version with the same 128GB storage as the macbook Pro is $300 dollars cheaper, and aside from the fabric is identical to the Alumuinum surface with upgradeable ssd ay a later date for much cheaper possible by the user.

Other then better cpu/gpu perfprmance, 2 usba ports, taller screen, ability to add another usbc, or dock or monitor to the fast charging surface connect port....

....the ace up Microsoft's sleeve is that users can upgrade the ssd themselves, with a special torx driver.
512GB is about $80, and 1TB is under $200, as we speak, and this is huge!

Most people with thunderbolt 3 never ever upgrade to an expensive egpu chassis, and then also buy the expensive videocard, along with the expensive short tb3 cable, we are talking about an extra $500-$1500 cost.

Most buyer who will need thunderbolt three do the practical thing and buy a laptop with dedicated graphics as many 13-14" laptops have now aside from apple, that is much cheaper then adding an EGPU through thunderbolt, and with less complexity and compatibility and driver problems.

Most use thunderbolt 3 to add docks, port adapters, monitors, storage, battery cases, all of which can be down just as well and fast with usbc.

The tenth gen processors have special instructions on them that speed up rendering, encoding, 4 k even 8k, that is not available on the 8th gen chips

Otherwise great comparison..
Thanks.

I can see pain in Max’s eyes every time surface beats a category spec lol

The MacBook is more portable? I guess those 3mm ruin portability. Haha

Specs aren’t similar, surface laptop has 10th gen processor whereas macbook has 8th gen. This guy is just biased

My Surface Laptop 3's type-C can connect to a 4k 60hz monitor (U3219Q) while charging at the same time. I like your videos but you should do your research better.

I'm a Macbook user for years now, and I have i have to say, I'm quite impressed with the Surface this year. If I had to choose at this price point between these 2 I would have to go with the Surface. Its time for Apple to Up the Ante on their Pro laptops. This has been due for ages now.

Ummm... You can absoluetly connect hubs, monitors, etc through the USB C port. You just can't get external video cards.

Thanks for the great comparison. Appreciate your thoroughness! You missed one point. The Surface pro has a touch screen.
In my work I mainly read documents and attend meetings. Everything is paperless so I mostly read .pdfs and annotate before and during meetings on glass with a stylus. I use soft notebooks for all note taking. Like to hand write notes only. Better engages the brain with the content and you can draw lines and pictures as you go. Often pdf an email and add it to the meeting folder. Give me paper, I hand it back, "email or link me, now".

As an early adopter I use an iPad (my 3rd) and have a Macbook Pro. Most of my colleagues are now paperless and more than half use now use touch screen PCs and more than half of them are MS Surfaces.

Perhaps you could follow up this review by comparing the Surface with the iPad. Ease of annotation of documents and use of note books for hand written notes. Comparison of Aps. Ease of email use, opening and making small changes to MS office files, ease of conversion of MS Office files to .pdfs for meetings. Yeh I know MS Office does hand writing too. I love Good Reader. Kills everything else.

When you compare costs you need to compare the Surface with a Macbook Pro plus an iPad with Apple keyboard and Apple pencil. The Apple cost will be more than 1.5 times could be 2X if you went top line iPad. Then there is the nuisance of charging and looking after two devices plus hassles with transferring documents through iCloud. I would be really interested in a proper comparison between the Surface and Apple equivalent for my use case.

Thanks again.
P

Genuine Twilight Zone moment, where the Surface 'MagSafe type' power connector is an advantage over a MacBook....

You forgot to mention the biggest difference between these 2 laptops - the failing keyboard problems of the Macbook mean you'll likely be replacing the keyboard multiple times and have downtime with no laptop at all. Apple extended the warranty, but the reality is that you have to count on losing a week or 2 each time you send the macbook back for repairs. It no longer makes any sense to purchase a macbook.
