In the end ‘The Video Game Champion’ celebrates that classic 80s spirit of pushing against the odds, rising up to the challenge in the face of adversity. I turn 50 years old this year. When the electric guitar hits in the synth intro, the portal opens. I walk through. On the other side, it's, 1988 in my hometown in Northern California. I'm at the mall, in the arcade known as the Gold Mine. I insert one quarter into the game Heavy Barrell, a game I've been playing every week for a couple of months. 45 minutes later, I complete the game for the first and only time on one single quarter. I literally never play it again. My simple memories of the 1980's are simply the best of my life. Synthwave music has been so bittersweet to me. It's tricked me into believing that my whole life is ahead of me, that the dreams of the 80's, which still seem in front of us some 3 plus decades on, are attainable. The portal takes me to a place that's long gone, but somehow still promising. I'm tricked into the optimism of a future that already passed me by. I'm dreaming of a girl that I knew in high school, dated in Jr. high school, that's still the most beautiful girl I'll ever know. To this day, I'm the age I am, she's my age, but in my vision, no matter what the context, her face is still 17. Her legs fit perfectly into jeans that were last in style in 1989. My car was from the 70's, it still seems new to me. Memories, and the things that trigger them, are as powerful as any hallucinogenics. This music seems to have that power over me.
