As a tennis player, I just know you can’t play when the ball is cold

If you’re being REALLY technical, the correction is not that the colder, stiffer ball bounces lower, it’s that a colder tennis ball is actually less stiff! Rubbers, when above a certain critical temperature (their glass transition temperature) become stiffer when they’re warmer, which is the opposite relationship found in metals and ceramics. This is because rubbers are entropy springs, so at higher temperatures there is more driving force to bring them to back to their equilibrium shape after being bounced. Hope someone finds this interesting!

I like the fact that he isn’t showing the video until after he reveals which one is true so we can’t figure out the false one by figuring out which one was the easiest to fake

Everytime i get one of these videos right, i feel like a scientist 😂

There's a noticeable difference between playing tennis on a cold dry day and a hot dry day, which makes sense because of the pressure inside the ball.

A dried pine cone closes in cold water because pinecones are actually the protective covering for pine seeds and they are made to close up in cold conditions to protect the seed, then after winter in spring or summer you might see them fall on the ground and open up to spread the seeds and grow another pine tree. :)

I knew about the pinecone one because of forests in France and the Netherlands. When it rains a lot here we actually tend to see those closed pinecones, so I figures it was true

Pinecones are also a good indicator of temperatures, closing when it is cooler and opening when it is warmer. That is because they often use wildfires to spread their seeds, and if you want to harvest pine nuts before the critters get them (without having to scrape around in the needle litter) you can bake them to open them.

The tangerine also has lots of gasses in the peel, which you're removing.

I predicted the cold ball would actually bounce lower, I'm proud of myself

As a dog owner in the northern Rockies, cold tennis balls don't bounce well

I only know this because I play tennis 😂😂

I definitely heard the first one as ‘the cold ball bounces less’ and was very confused 😂

As an Oregonian, I have never seen an open pinecone like that

Number one. Freezing lowers the elasticity of the tennis ball.
