I hope they just pull an Overwatch/CS and release "Sea Of Thieves 2" but it's really just a replacement of the original game. They could keep "Sea Of Thieves Classic" on Xbox One, similar to what Minecraft PS3 and Fortnite iOS did.

whatever happens, I really hope we can roll our characters forward. I'm sure lots of people have put lots of time (and/or money wrt. emporium cosmetics) into current SoT, would be a bit of a bummer to have to start from scratch in a new game.

There would need to port your characters over to some degree: I am not earning Gold Bones again or their equivalent in a SoT2

I like the idea of SoT Classic servers. They can keep this option running for those on old hardware, or people who don't like change.

Then they can update the game based on current gen or even next gen standards.

I think expanding would be better than making a sequel. Even if they still don't want to go too big, just rotate available zones like devils roar and ice lands on a seasonal schedule. Then just cover blocked zones in fog/red seas.

Imagine a team vs team deathmatch mode. Like a 5 ship vs 5 ship pvp. Would be absolutely epic.

I'm guessing they would need to upgrade the backend servers too. Best guess it's cloud tech as they're in bed with Microsoft they get dirt cheap rates on cloud based tech, porbably have around 40-50, 000 vitual servers running at any given moment in MS Azure. To increase the frontend capabilities they would need to up the backend code to allow more players, bigger battles, bigger maps, more loot types, etc. Will be interesting to see where SoT goes over the next couple of years.

Ultimate next gen pitch with a Sea of thieves 2: 132+ players on a server of sea of thieves, destructible environment, real pve (cities with NPCs that go around that can be invaded / stolen;; servers start blank but players change the state of the world), epic chaotic naval battles (BIG faction wars), listed servers (people could choose who to join / have private hosted servers)... this game has alot of potential, but I'll keep dreaming.
