✵ America's Forgotten Mountain Ranges

✵ When you think of Mountains in America, what comes to mind? There should be two main areas youre thinking of, The Rockies and the Appalachians. Those are the two main ranges in America. But there are many other areas that vary greatly in elevation, whether that be just hills or very pronounced mountain-like objects. So today I’m here to tell you about some of America’s forgotten mountain ranges.

Important note:

The Addirondacks are Geologically unrealated to the Appalachians. The Appalachians were born durring the Greenville orogeny and were the result of the collision of tectonic plates. (This was back when pangea was a thing, all the mountains in New England are a part of them, and the Scotish Highlands are technically a part of them but for obvious reasons aren't normally associated with them)

And what you called the Rockies is actually the North American Cordillera which encompasses 3 ranges of the Pacific Coast ranges, the Nevadan Belt, and the Laramide belt (includes the Rockies in Colorado). So no the Cascades and Sierra Nevadas are NOT part of the rockies.

Its a bit shameful getting this wrong on a video about poor knowledge of America's mountain ranges. (Especially since you are a geography channel)

The cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges shouldn’t be considered part of the greater Rockies, they were formed in much different ways and in much different times.

I love when channels mention my state, Nebraska is quite overlooked.

The Driftless Area also extends into Northwest Illinois. Galena is a well-known resort town in Illinois.

I liked this video. Two other mountain/hilly areas I would point out would be the Wichita mountains in SW Oklahoma near Lawton and the Capilano volcanic field near Clayton NM east of the rockies. Keep up the good work man.

One nitpick here: the Cascades and the Sierra Nevada are NOT considered part of the Rockies! There's a huge stretch of relative lowlands called the Great Basin.

I've known since grade school that the Rockies were next to the Great Plains, not on the ocean.

In addition to the Ozarks, Arkansas and a small part of eastern Oklahoma have the Ouachita ("WASH-it-taw") Mountains. The Ouachitas are pretty close to the Ozarks, and those two mountain ranges are alike in that they're not as high as the Rockies, but they're still high enough to be considered mountains.

One fairly well known city in the Ouachitas is Hot Springs, Arkansas, which is about an hour west of Little Rock. Hot Springs has a row of bath houses that at various times have been used for medical or recreational purposes; it was said that the naturally hot spring water found in the area was therapeutic; that might have been and might still be the case for some people.

About a century ago, Major League Baseball held some spring training games in Hot Springs; Babe Ruth was there with the Yankees in the 1920s and early 30s.

Today, you can see the beauty of the Ouachitas along with beautiful fall foliage that rivals anything I've seen in the Northeast and Midwest US.

Hot Springs also has one of the largest documentary film festivals in the world, held every October. Some luminaries who have attended are Ken Burns and James Earl Jones.

Being one of the few people who have lived in the driftless area (still living near it) it is amazing to see people who are aware of such a beautiful place! I love it

I usually think of the USA of having three major ranges, including the Sierras/Cascades as their own

Im from Nebraska and the sandhills are some very underrated scenery. However, I dont think theyre really worth going to see unless youre a big golfer or really like small towns

In southwest Arizona, the Gila Mountains, the Mohawk Mountains, the Sentinal-Arlington lava field (with over 50 volcanos); in Oklahoma, the Witchita Mountains... and seconding lots of the other mentions in comments! Great video, thank you Beaver!

Bruh. The Sierra Nevada is totally different from the Rockies. The Sierra Nevada is the mountain range that kills you or makes you eat the dead members of your party after you successfully cross the Rockies without incident.

Love the drift less area in WI, so glad it made the list!

I grew up in Minnesota in a pretty flat place without many hills, I thought the Driftless zone was the damn Alps when I saw them as a kid.
As beautiful as it is, it's also a bit disappointing. The Driftless Area and Superior ranges used to be 10k-15k feet tall around 2 Billion years ago, wish it was still like that.

I consider that there are 3 major mountain ranges in the U.S. I consider the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades as one very long mountain range and it is extraordinarily important for agriculture. The Sierra Nevada alone is the lifeblood of the largest agricultural state in the U.S., California. There are a number of food products grown in the state that are almost exclusively produced there. I think the entire range, from southern California to the Canadian boundary deserves the same recognition as the Rockies and Appalachians. Probably more than the Appalachians.

EDIT: I did not form this opinion all by myself, I was taught in elementary school to college that there were 3 major ranges in the U.S.

Interesting how "forgotten" The Black Hills region is, even though it's highest point is higher than anything east of The Mississippi River.

From Northern illinois, when I started truck driving I got to see the Rockies, and Appalachias for the first time. They dint compare to the drift less region. So much beauty, so close up north and Chicago that no one talks about. If you live in the Chicago metro area you should definitely check it out!

A lot of folks consider the Uinta mountains in Utah to be a part of the Rockies but I feel like they’re unique enough to deserve a mention, it’s a rare east-west mountain range that has the tallest peaks in Utah (several over 13, 000 feet). It’s a beautiful area that isn’t well known outside of Utah/the wasatch range
