Another obscure game has stormed onto Hamster's Arcade Archives. The 1988 release Takeda Shingen is a 2D weapons-based brawler developed by the middling Jaleco. The Sengoku (Warring States) period was a time of great internal conflicts in Japan. Takeda Shingen was a famous daimyo (territorial lord) in this time, and is the main protagonist of the game. The game is a typical brawler with weapons and a scrolling screen. Controls are similar to Double Dragon II: The Revenge - with right and left attack buttons. The game also features archery-based bonus stages between levels, where Takeda rides on his horse and must shoot a target using his bow. True to Jaleco's middling output, Takeda Shingen's features simple and stilted combat that was at the time notable for the amount of gore. This was also Jaleco's first brawler before developing 64th Street: A Detective Story and the Rushing Beat trilogy. The 1989 PC Engine title was developed by Aicom (Makyou Densetsu: The Legendary Axe, The Lord of King: The Astyanax, Gun-Dec/Vice: Project of Doom, Viewpoint, Pulstar, Blazing Star), which was a completely different game from the arcade version. After remaining in obscurity, Takeda Shingen: Samurai-Fighter marks its new home on Arcade Archives for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (June 24, 2021 worldwide except Asia). Despite the English name, the Hamster release only features the Japanese version. As expected, it's a faithful emulation with the barebones set of options, online leaderboards and score attack modes. Given the various brawlers available on Hamster's service (including Jaleco's own 64th Street: A Detective Story), you can do much worse than Takeda Shingen. On the other hand, to say nothing of Koei Tecmo recently releasing Samurai Warriors 5...
