Smartware is the backup software that you download as part of the Mycloud software installation. It is used to back up individual files and folders, that's why there is a share already created so as to store your scheduled individual files and folder instead of the whole Sharepoint backup (which backs up you entire mycloud)

I bought a real NAS (Buffalo LS-WXL/R1) that cost less than this ($90 for the NAS and $82 each for two 2 terabyte drives of my own choice).  I have a full RAID ARRAY which I set up as a complete self contained mirror in case of drive failure and full cloud access, but many more professional attributes than this machine, but if someone feels more daring, they could use all 4 terabytes.  Of course it's possible to insert larger drives for just a bit more per drive.  I would recommend that before this, although it is much more difficult to set up and access since it is more akin to professional IT hardware.  One thing that make these personal clouds less attractive than their commercial counterparts is the inability to access documents directly from the file menu in Microsoft Office or the office suite of your choice.  It would be really nice to have some sort of SharePoint, and other platform equivalent functionality built in to these machines for that purpose.   These focus more on photo and video access and less on the ease access to data files.  Buffalo has apps available for all types of smartphones and computers, Android, Apple, Windows 8.1 and below, Windows Phone, iPhone, Linux, etc.  I just think though it's a little less user friendly in set-up, once it's complete, it's a lot more for a bit less money.
