Why (I) Make Films

We're starting a documentary filmmaking course!

Jonas and I have a handful of films lined up to release over the next couple months. But, before you make your film, you need to ask this one simple question - why are you doing it?

A special thanks to our existing supporters: Tobias Haase, Medesthai, Larry Nelson, Please Stand By, James Brady, Morgan Price, Jinyuan Yeong, George Logue and all the others that help fund our work.

I finally get out of high school tomorrow and for the past four years I've taught myself through trail and error the basics of cinematography. Now that I have a lot more time in my hands I want to turn my flashy, eye candy, hype videos into something more meaningful. Rather than entertaining people for 2-3 minutes I want to incorporate a message in my videos. I want people to walk away from my videos thinking about what they just watched. I've been able to save up my money with my freelancing to buy a 4k camera, a fancy gimbal, and a cinema lens. With so much time in my hands now, I'm going to try to giving people a voice to those who don't have one. By sharing struggling people's stories I can hopefully give them a platform to reach out to those who live comfortably in their own bubbles. By getting people out of their comfort zones I can try to make them more open minded and eventually give back to a community they never even knew about.

I'm not a teacher nor someone particularly interested in science - but I am a fan of passion and professionalism and that is why I enjoy watching you guys. I also look to learn film making from you so I can apply it to things I care about.

Thank you for the inspiration boost! Right now I am in college double majoring in Ecology and Filmmaking so I can one day become a wildlife filmmaker, not only because it is my passion, but also to show people our beautiful planet and why there is a good reason to preserve it and save it. So thank you again for inspiring other by giving by telling us what inspires you to pursue your passion.

I do it largely for the love it, and secondly, the response (both good and sometimes bad) I get from people I would never otherwise talk to or meet. I've Never really had any hobbies before I purchased by first drone a year and a half ago, and since then my camera gear has grown ten fold. Hoping to some day to turn this passion into something I can earn a constant income off but time will tell. Until then I will keep watching inspiring videos and tutes such as you guys - Keep it up!

Looking forward to learning more from you and Jonas about filmmaking to improve the ART of storytelling! I have so much 4K B-roll in the can, but I'm not good at much past that. I need to learn how to use the awesome tools I have and how to create a story of interest :)

It's funny that I started producing videos for fun, and over time I was getting more and more in love with it. Today, watching the video of you, I am completely inspired to produce content geared to the marine sciences, unfortunately it is not easy to make this type of content mega-attractive, but you make me believe that it is possible

I make videos to entertain people, but also to get the viewers out of their comfort zone as I take them with me out of my comfort zone. I'm hoping to trigger curiosity, open-mindedness and the desire to get out there.

This was a great video. And that is a powerful question "WHY"
For a creative that's sometime the hardest question to answer. I truly can relate with this video and want to say thank you!

You did a great job on the color grade of your main shot. I really like the richness of the colors and the blur of the background.

Always enjoy watching your videos despite following tens of other youtube channels yours and a couple of others are always those which grip me.

Personally, I make (used to make, currently on hiatus) videos as a form of journaling or history writing.

I haven't finished my documentary yet but I hope when its finally done I can somehow credit you guys because no lie, the Rob and Jonas tutorial videos really helped me get started...
I hope story is also talked about somewhere along the series. But just this video was so helpful too, it reminded me of why I even started.

I LOVE the work guys put out in this channel and your other channels as well!
I started making videos simply because I wanted to make videos of places so that others could see what I saw.
At first I started taking photos but then I realized that video was a much better platform to really show the outdoor places I was visiting. Most of the time photos don't really do a place justice (well at least I didn't have the experience to capture the scene through photos) so I naturally did a much better job of it through video. Many of the super-positive comments of people who could no longer visit these outdoor places (because of old age or other things like distance) just fueled my fire to create more videos. Skipping from my super humble beginnings in the video world in 2015 to my super humble current state in 2018 where I now shoot and edit videos for a company and work strictly on their YouTube channel, I find that I love my I also want to do more though!!! More personal projects, more side video jobs, more, more, more!!! :)

I'm a aquatic ecologist myself and I love all the small creepy crawlies that live in river beds or on ocean floors. But those are the organisms that are often overlooked. People see the big charismatic animals, but not the others and I would like to change that. Because Mayfly nymphs and parasitic isopods are just as unique, complex, and cool as tigers, sharks, and apes.

This has way too few likes! Came across one of your video making tutorials then saw this video. Love your story and keep at what you're doing!

I started making videos because it was fun. Now, I make videos to share our findings with the general public. They won't read about it in scientific papers. Even newspapers because news on wildlife are not presented interesting enough to get there attention. Videos are great way to share results. I have got feedback from people I don't even know. Hopefully, my videos are really making people think about the wildlife that we are losing rapidly.
