True story. I bought my first VCR, paid about $500 for it so I could record Miami Vice on Friday nights.

Don is 100% right. The show had a certain look and style which doesn't exist anymore. It captured a certain era perfectly and I don't mean the 80's as a whole. It captured all the coolest parts of the 80's with the styles, colours, cars, landscapes and cinematography. You can't realistically get that in 2022.

He's trying to say that he doesn't want ruin Miami Vice by setting it in another decade.

The 80's were friggin magical! I often feel sorry for my daughter because the world she's growing up in just sucks by comparison.

Best show ever. Period. The title made my heart stop! Awesome to know Crockett and Tubbs still keep up. Absolute legends. No TV show has ever come close to achieving what Miami Vice did.

The opening episode, with the sequence of them driving with "In The Air Tonight", changed television.
And it was incredibly well written and performed drama.

I'm happy to see that Don Johnson has a "critical" view of a reboot. More often than not, reboots are made just for a quick cash in and I think it would kinda ruin the legacy of miami vice if they'd make a lazy reboot without capturing the spirit.

Miami vice is a period peice of the 80s with the fashion the soundtrack and the entire vibe of the show you can't do that with the 2020s

Sonny Crockett will always be the coolest tv character ever. So good to know Don Johnson and Phillip-Michael Thomas still keep in touch!

He's on point. The show was specific to the 80's. That decade was like a beautiful flower that was blossoming and when it opened all the way it was like an explosion of the likes we will never see again. So much was happening and changing and it can never be replicated. Plus the topics MV touched on are nothing in todays world. Miss the show and the 80's. Wish all could have experienced it. Damn glad I did.🇺🇸🙏✌🦋☘🇺🇸

I would definitely watch it. It won’t be the same, though. He’s right about it being a different time and place. The music, cars, clothes, architecture and people’s attitudes are very different from then.

He clearly wouldn't want that to happen and he's right. Miami Vice was perfect the way it was and WHEN it was, it's a creation suspended in time. It shouldn't be touched from the modern perspective. All we can do is just never stop rewatching this masterpiece

DJ you're a good man! Crockett n Tubbs fan here. Growing up in the 80's as I did, Miami Vice was a favorite.

Michael Mann had a ground breaking show on his hands with this one. Its popularity was all over magazine covers that extended beyond People and Us. I was into it from the first episode when it aired in '84. That show had such an impact on pop culture. Being shot in Miami during its cocaine boom of the 1980s was a source of inspiration for a lot of the stories . The way Mann infused the music of that are into every episode made it each one like an hour long music video. Which was a reflection of the times since MTV had begun 4 years prior and was grabbing eyeballs in the late teen to 30s age group. The clothing styles were popping up in stores all across the country.

I'm not too sure that formula would work today though. There are some decent cop shows today but none that blend the components of the visuals, the styles, music, lighting, and colors the way Michael Mann did. I haven't really seen anything on TV today that influences a particular "look" the way Vice did back then. That's one of the things that made it work.

I miss that era. I was just fresh out of college in '84 and it was so much fun. The clothes were cool, the music was cool.

Love MV. He's right, though. It was a time and a place and it cannot be repeated. Thanks for asking him his thoughts on it! xo

Miami Vice was, and still is THE BEST TV SHOW EVER! And that's because the 1980's is, in my opinion, the BEST DECADE EVER. The world opened up and became alive. People were happier. People talked to each other. It was such a magical time to be alive and be part of. My gf's father spent almost $900 for a VCR so we could record this show.
Great Movies
Great TV Shows
Great Music
Great Clothing
Great Cars and the list goes on..
Miami Vice was the 80's!...and I can honestly say that's the only time, besides when my kids were born, that I've ever felt safe and been Happy. Nowadays I just sit in the house and watch TV..

I miss the 80's REALLY BAD. That show was my brother's favorite show and every Friday we had that show to look foward to. So cool that those two actors still keep in contact. They were like the perfect law enforcement partnership. That show somehow had the perfect combo of action, humor, suspense, drama, and great variety of scenery. Never been but still want to go to Miami for that show alone.
